D Now is a wonderful event and it has the potential to be one of the greatest weekends in your student's lives. But since they will spend most of their time in their small groups, how effective those groups are will be a major contributing factor in how successful your event is. While much of this is out of your control, there are some specific steps you can take increase the possibility that your student's small group time will be meaningful and effective.
The first step towards having effective small groups is being wise about how you divide your students up. There are many ways you can go about this process but there are some things you want to keep in mind. I usually like to divide my students by age and gender. This helps you to avoid various discipline issues but also makes your students feel more comfortable about sharing with one another. Also, if there are several schools in your community, you may want to divide students up based on what school they attend. The reason for this is that you want what happens in your D Now weekend to carry over in the weeks to come. This is more likely to happen if students are connected with people they go to school with who can love and support them day in and day out.
Next you want to pick good leaders. This almost goes without saying, but you want to be selective in who you entrust to lead your students during this event. Much of how your event goes is in their hands. Not only do you want to be careful about whom you choose to lead your students but you also want to train them in how to lead. Leading a small group is a skill and it does not come naturally to many people. You do not want to risk throwing away all of your planning and effort just because you did not take the time to train your leaders.
D Now is a wonderful event. But since much of the time in this event is spent in small groups you want to make sure you carefully create them. If you will follow these simple steps though I believe the group times during your event will be meaningful and effective.
