Typical curve radius in a yard?
Anyone know minimum and typical turn radii in a standard gauge US rail yard? And the radii for turnouts?
Curves on railroads are not measured in yards of the radius of the curve , but in degrees of curvature.The smaller the number of degrees the broader the curve. Most railway curves are of 6 degrees or less the average on mainline trackage is 4 degrees. Turnouts are measured in degrees of angle of the frog, with 4 being the tightest and 8 the broadest. Most yard turnouts are number 6, as this will allow the most cars to pass through with out derailing.
