CNC Turning stands for Computer Numerical Control Turning and is the process where a cutting tool (single point) is parallel to the surface of the material. It can be done manually and used to be done like this all the time, however advances in technology and the introduction of computers controlled by software spelt an end to doing this task manually. Instead a computer is rigged up to the Turning Machinery and specialised computer software plots points and tells the machine where and how to turn and shape the material. They do not require human supervision except for the operation (starting the machinery). It is recommended that some one does check over its operation as at the end of the day, computers can malfunction and software can go wrong.
Turning works by the desired material (metal, wood, stone or plastic) being rotated and pressed against a cutting tool, the cutting tool moves along 2 axes of motion, this produces extremely precise depths and diameters. Turning machines also have the capability to perform boring; this is done by the cutting tool being placed inside the materials cylinder rather than outside.
Turning is carried out traditionally on a lathe (there is no such machine labelled a turning machine, it is more a process carried out on a machine tool). There are also different types of turning that can be performed; each has the capabilities to produce different shapes like curved, straight, grooved or conical. The different methods are as follows:
o Taper Turning

o External Grooving
o Profiling
