I want to try and take a new perspective on the idea of youth ministry resources. Not so far off the deep end that we do not need them. Trust me, I have tried every study and way I can to do away with messy games and other parts of student ministry like that. You know, the things you do every year that work every time but a big part of you prays they do not. Or maybe a better way to look at it is those things you would give to an intern if you had one. But I am not talking about that.
The materials we use are there for a reason. They are not going away. What I am talking about is where should the youth ministry resources we use rank in our ministry? For many people they are the first thing they think about in the morning, last thing they worry about as they leave the office, and the thing they spend the most time on. This just is not right. While the materials we use and the activities we do are a big part of what we do they are not the biggest part. Our time with God is way more important than those things. The relationships with our students and our families are far superior to games, sermons, lessons, etc. We have to begin to change our perspective and priorities.
Stop placing such a high priority on the various youth ministry resources that you use. Re-evaluate how you see them and put them in their proper place. One of the best ways I have done this is stop creating my own. It seems simple, but it is a beautiful act of letting go of control and freeing me up for the things that really matter. There are some very talented and gifted people out there creating resources. Let them do what they do best and you focus on what is most important for you. Impacting both your families and your students.
